Twitter Posts Hit Bing

Microsoft has begun adding Twitter posts to Bing search results, as it looks to take advantage of the immense popularity of the micro-blogging site. According to a Microsoft blog posting, the company was drawn to Twitter’s ability to instantly reflect developing topics and public sentiment.

“There has been much discussion of real-time search and the premium on immediacy of data that has been created primarily by Twitter,” wrote Sean Suchter, general manager of Microsoft’s Silicon Valley Search Technology Center, on a company blog.

“We’ve been watching this phenomenon with great interest, and listening carefully to what consumers really want in this space. We’re not indexing all of Twitter at this time… just a small set of prominent and prolific Twitterers to start.

“We think this is an interesting first step toward using Twitter’s public API to surface Tweets in people search,” he concluded.

The launch is something of a coup for Microsoft, which becomes the first major search company to index Tweets. However, the company has admitted that it will initially only index a “few thousand people, based primarily on their follower count and volume of tweets,” including Al Gore and Ashton Kutcher.

This number is expected to rise depending on the success of the service, which is currently only available to those making searches on the US site, and requires users to enter the word Twitter after their search.

What is a search engine without a collection of tools tailored to the needs of webmasters and web developers? With the Bing Toolbox Microsoft is looking to provide website owners with the resources necessary to adapt their websites and online applications to Bing. The Redmond company announced the Bing Toolbox at the end of the past week, indicating that the website brought to the table a set of tools built especially for the Bing community. The promise from the software giant is that Bing Toolbox will serve as the key to boost user engagement and traffic to websites and web-based apps via the successor of Live Search.

“We’re really excited to announce the arrival of the Bing Toolbox, a new portal for all you Bing webmasters, publishers, developers, and advertisers out there. The Toolbox is an organized set of tools for the entire Bing community, plus links to our Webmaster and Developer community blogs and forums. The Toolbox provides everything you need to work with Bing in one place—as well as the site you’ll want to regularly visit for announcements of cool new features the moment they’re ready,” revealed Rick DeJarnette, Bing Webmaster Center.

Bing Toolbox enables website owners to easily submit their URLs to be indexed by the search engine. At the same time, the portal enables the submission of sitemap files and access to the Bing webmaster tools. For developers looking to use Bing as a platform, the Toolbox allows them to get an AppID, the first step on leveraging the Bing application programming interface (API).

Developer tools now available in the Bing Toolbox include those for API access, PowerToys, Maps, and Translator. This is a first effort and we’ll be building out the site with new content and updated tools as they become available,” a member of the Bing team added.

The discussion on whether or not Pagerank has any importance for SEO will probably be kept alive for a while. The discussion is being held again at the moment when several sites noticed that Google was doing another Pagerank update this week.

With every pagerank update sites lose or win pagerank points. This time around one site made a suprising leap: Bing.com saw their Pagerank increased from 2 to 9…

Google hands Bing a pagerank 9

The pagerank lift for Bing is remarkable. Not only is the leap from a PR2 to a PR9 pretty high, it’s also remarkable that a site which might be Googles biggest competitor in the next coming years gets such a high PR from their main rivals.

But will Bing benefit from the PR9? Yes it will. In several ways actually. First off all Google is indexing Bing. At this moment about 900.000 Bing pages are indexed by Google. This means that with a PR9 and the right optimized pages Bing results can be showing up in the Google results. Second, Bing getting a PR9 will create some sort of buzz, since blogs and Twitter will report about this (like we do) thus creating more attention for Bing. Without a doubt Bing will benefit and gain visitors from those curious of why Bing got that PR9.

Another interesting thing about this PR update is that Google is doing the updates more often. With the last update only a month earlier speculations are starting why Google is doing these updates so often. It probably has got something to do with the real time search Google has to battle Twittersearch in. The content on the web is changing faster than ever so Google has to keep up. And without a doubt Google is updating more than just their pagerank…
